There are problems with the new AVG Link Scanner, but if you follow this you will be GOLDEN!!

Relax, This is a whole lot easier than it looks. You will look back on this and laugh!

1     avg_free_stf_en_85_287a1483.exe   download  it  to your desktop

2     Copy it to the root of your hard drive (drag it and drop it on the drive c icon in my computer)

*3     Copy this following text from your browser window by selecting it and right clicking and selecting copy. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!

c:\avg_free_stf_en_85_287a1483.exe /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSurf /REMOVE_FEATURE fea_AVG_SafeSearch

4     Paste it into the run command. Go to the start in the lower left corner and open run from the start menu. paste it in and hit run. wait. When AVG starts exit it, yes exit it. If it started to run you did everything right up to this point, I hope.

(If you are running Vista, you most likely will not have a run command. By default it is disabled. It is easy to enable, search windows help for "what happened to the run command". You may also need to  download this windows update, FOR VISTA ONLY). This is optional and you can do it later if you experience the problem.

Slow opening of websites on Windows Vista

5     Print these instructions you are now reading so it is accessible without you being online. Select the text and choose print selection if you need to, to print the entire text.

6     Disconnect from the internet (optional)

7     Remove AVG 7.5 in the control panel add/remove programs

8     restart the system

9     close other programs

10     Go back to the run command. Run the AVG script that will still be typed in to the run command.

11     do not install the AVG security toolbar

12     Do not allow it to run scans, they will wear out your hard drive and void the warranty. It has resident shield, it does not need to run scans.

13     Reconnect to the internet

14     say yes to windows installer accessing the internet (if asked)

15    Update AVG, be patient. It is now ready to use

If it seems to hang let it sit and go and do something else. As long as you did the above steps I have laid out here for you it should not hang. It should all go smoothly

* The installation will be started, and AVG will be installed without the LinkScanner component.

The link scanner is causing hangs and other problems and is not necessary with Firefox as your Browser

Get Firefox Browser    Surf Safe, this Browser is way safer than IE. I can't more strongly suggest that you use Firefox. IE6 has expired and IE7 caused a large amount of problems when it was installed initally and uninstalling it did not fix it due to two masked files. They have since fixed it but it is still not Safe like they would have you believe.

Spybot    This is my choice at this time for spyware defense. Months ago it would have been Ad-aware, but they got worse and Spybot got better. Some is built in to Free AVG 8.0 but I have not tested it yet. I chose to set it up without teatimer and immunization since I don't like any software having that much control incase it makes a mistake. I have had no problems using this strategy for 3 years now. Be careful, there are many look alike products on the Internet. Get it here to be sure it is the correct one and has been tested against hundreds of other brands so you are getting the best protection possible.
